Suni-ai
Suni-ai means "through listening". It is a deep listening where every cell of your being is vibrating in awareness, consciousness, and inner knowing. In Suni-ai there is no judgment or belief; your whole Self is immersed in a deep listening that is fully vibrating in shimmering presence.
The last couple of months I have been reciting and listening to the mantra So Purkh daily. Through the cycle of the waxing and waning moon, I am acutely aware of the subtle shifts in my concentration on the mantra, and the quality of listening. I notice a beautiful space that emerges as I slip into what perhaps is (close to) Suni-ai. There is a distinct shift from listening with the ears, to listening with the whole body, every cell of the being. Effort releases, there is lightness, and soft, vast perception.
Imagine bringing this quality of Deep Listening - Suni-ai - into everyday life! To heighten this quality, recite the 8th Pauri of Japji 11 times/day. Snatam Kaur has three beautiful versions of Japji on her album "Meditation of the Soul." So Purkh: A Mantra for Women for the Men in their lives.
So Purkh "creates a sacred space in which grace prevails so as to allow the greatness of the soul to come forth." Women chant this mantra to elevate the men in their lives. Yogi Bhajan taught that if a woman recites this mantra 11 times a day for 40 days, that 'God' will appear for her in the form of a man. Though beware, as our karma around men is clearing, God may appear as the 'devil' first!

Jap
One of the most basic 'commands' in Kundalini Yoga is 'Jap!' Jap means to chant, to repeat.
"As we continue to chant - to practice japa - we create a series of effects in the body and being. Through the action of japa, we create tapa - divine psychic heat. This heat then burns the karma - the imprint, or seeds, of past actions (which are also vibrations) that we carry within us." ~ Dev Suroop Kaur Khalsa
Chanting, and in particular, repetitive chanting of sacred mantras, is an incredibly effective form of meditation to still and train the mind, as well as an incredibly effective form of deep therapy to work through specific issues as they arise. Akal Maha Kal Mantra - the Great Death
Akal means Undying, and Maha Kal means Great Death. When we chant Akal Maha Kal, we open to the awareness of the undying nature of our Soul Body. When we are connected with our Soul Body, we are fearless.
"'Mantra' means inner protection. An actual mantra is a wisdom realization that directly protects living beings from suffering, and mantras that we verbally recite are methods to accomplish the actual mantra."

To chant the Akal Maha Kal mantra:
- Sit in a comfortable seated position with your spine straight
- Cross your wrists over your Heart Center and allow your palms to rest ease fully near your shoulders and collar-bones.
- Have the eyes closed and focussed at the top of the head.
- Chant Akal Maha Akal very distinctly and in monotone, vibrating the sounds at the centre of your head.
- Continue for 10.5 minutes. To end, inhale, hold your breath, exhale, and meditate for a few minutes in the effects of the sacred sound current.
Mirabai Ceiba has a lovely version of this mantra on their new album Sevati.
Akal on its' own is a special mantra that is chanted during the first 17 days after someone has died. This mantra helps the Soul Body cross over the Earth's electro-magnetic field, and continue on its' way to its' true home.
If you would like to engage in this practice when someone dies, the minimum suggestion is to chant Akal for 11 minutes/day for 3 days. Otherwise, have at least 5 people chanting Akal for 31 minutes/day for the full 17-day duration.
Kriya for Deep Sleep - the little death
Below is a wonderful Kriya for promoting solid, uninterrupted, and restful sleep. I have used this many times and have found it soooo effective.
The table top position that is repeated several times can be a bit much for the shoulders and neck, so ease into it by starting with 1 minute and working your way up to 3 minutes over time. For the crow pose, I love to place a rolled blanket under my heels so I can squat all the way down and keep my heels connected with earth/support.

Svadhyaya
Svadhyaya is one of five Niyamas (Observances) described by Patanjali as necessary for the unfolding of one's spiritual life. It can be translated as "one's own reading" or "self-study". It is the practice of contemplation, meditation, and reflection of one's self - often in connection with studying sacred texts, spiritual readings, and recitations.
Verse 22.92 of Vishnu Smriti states that the "human body is cleansed by water, the mind is cleansed by truth, the soul by self-study and meditation, while understanding is cleansed by knowledge."
Every week in my calendar I write down certain sentences that jump out from my daily readings - and then revisit them several times during the week. I trust that theses particular sentences jump out for a reason, and then use them as a source of contemplation and reflection.
Following I share four reflections of the past month:

1. On Sadhana...
"Get up in the morning and clear your subconscious, the unconscious will overload you and that will block your prosperity." ~Yogi Bhajan
Yogi Bhajan taught that the cornerstone of our spiritual life is Sadhana - our daily spiritual practice. There is a beautiful morning Sadhana from the Kundalini Yoga tradition that is approximately two and a half hours in length, done in the Amrit Vela - the pre-dawn hours before sunrise. At this time, the sun is positioned in relation to the earth in such a way that enables us to be closely attuned to the subtle realm, making it easier to perceive and feel a direct connection with our Soul. This is an opportune time for meditation - which clears our subconscious - making a path for our soul to shine through - uninhibited and untainted - every single day.
On occasion my Sadhana shifts to the afternoon or evening, but invariably it always comes back to the morning - this is where the strongest pull is. I find my day to day life is much more effective, more manageable, and more satisfying when I can start my day with Sadhana. However, Sadhana is very personal, and only you can know what type of daily spiritual discipline serves your Soul the best. Your Sadhana will change over time. Stay in tune with the desire of your Soul and shift your Sadhana as needed.
There are no short cuts for the integrated, sustainable, and fully human spiritual life. Be consistent and stay steady on the path!!

Or, "To judge another is the greatest setback we can experience" (Shannon Port). Imagine how much space there would be in our psyche and in our hearts without prejudices and judgements.
Judgement is not the same as discernment or preferences - though they can both easily be tainted with it. Discernment sharpens with Svadhyaya, and is a key attribute of Wisdom. Do not be afraid to use your choices of discernment - they can cut through and free you, and, many others.
Preferences are unique to our individual soul - embrace them, explore them, and let them flourish! Imagine stating our preferences with no ounce of judgement (sense of better than or less than), but rather with complete neutrality (yet still infused with freedom, peace, and joy). Imagine enjoying our preferences and allowing others to enjoy their preferences with no judgement. And similarly, imagine giving yourself the complete freedom to rest in your choices of discernment, with no judgement.

3. On Inner Guidance...

A lot of our attention is outer directed, and we are very used to responding and reacting to what is happening outside of us, to the extent that there may be very little that is coming directly from our true nature - from our unobstructed and pure self.
Often we are automatically propelled into action by momentum, but this momentum is, in fact, coming from a place that is outdated, based on memory, automatic reaction, habitual response, fear, and the like. This is where we are slipping into the unconscious and moving along life in momentum, but half awake. We have lost connection with the "spontaneous, unobstructed movement" which comes purely, freshly and wildly from within. Spontaneous, unobstructed movement is fresh, clear, pure, direct, and vibrant - this is the true source of our Inner Guidance, it is our Sat Nam, and this is the place (Swadhisthana - our sweet abode, our sacral chakra) where we want our movement to be coming from. This is the origin of the creative spark of our unadulterated actions.
Pranayama is one of the most effective techniques to cut through the habitual patterns of the mind that keep us stuck in ineffective loops of thoughts and actions. Breath in for a count of five, hold the breath for a count of ten, and breath out for a count of five (all through the nose). Continue for 3-11 minutes while meditating on the inflow and outflow of breath. Eventually shift the inhales and exhales to 10 counts, and the breath retention to 15 counts. This balances the sun and moon centres of the body, and allows the mind to remove itself of doubt. This also clears your magnetic field, giving you radiance and beauty. (from Dr. Gururattan's "Spirituality and Sexuality" manual on Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, 1989)

Over and over again Yogi Bhajan emphasized that Kundalini Yoga is a Yoga of Experience - your mind may accept words or it may not, but your consciousness will not accept words alone; therefore, practice practice practice. Eliphas Livi, a 19th century philosopher, cautioned, "Too deep a study of the mysteries of nature may estrange from God the careless investigator, in whom mental fatigue paralyses the ardor of the heart."

The Sacred Path of Kundalini
"By Her radiance it is that the whole of the universe and
this Cauldron is illumined" ~ Nirupana
Prana and Apana are two of the most important Vayus (winds) in the body. (Prana, in this case, is not to be confused with the all-pervasive Prana/Life-Force that is all around us). Techniques in Kundalini Yoga generate Prana Vayu to mix with Apana Vayu to create heat at the Pranic center - at the 8th vertebra - in order to put a charge on the Kundalini Energy coiled at Muladhara Chakra. The flow of Prana Vayu is inward and upward, and the flow of Apana Vayu is downward. When these two forces are joined, the heat created stimulates Kundalini Energy to rise up the Sushumana channel. Engaging Mulabandh helps mix the Prana and Apana Vayus at the navel centre (4th vertebra). This is why heat is often felt in Kundalini Awakening, "That heat is the filament of the Sushumana being lit by the joining of Prana and Apana (Gopi Krishna)."
If enough pressure is generated in the navel point, it will loop back down to the rectum, and then pierce the chakras one by one on the way up. Mulabandh brings the Apana Vayu up to the Navel Chakra, Uddiyana Bhandh brings it up to the Throat Chakra, and Jalandhara Bhandh brings it up to the Third Eye and Crown Chakras. Gopi Krishna reminds us, "Once you have raised it (Kundalini), the hardest job is to keep it up and keep the channels clean and clear." Hence, the practice - Sadhana - one's chosen spiritual discipline.

Pranayama for Control of Metabolism
Sometimes our instinctual urges go haywire and start to control us. Our instincts and our senses (as our mind) are meant to serve us, not to control us. One powerful pranayama technique that I've been trying out over the past month (which is used for haywire eating urges) is left nostril breathing:
- Sit in easy pose with your left hand in Gyan Mudra resting on your knee.
- With your right hand, close off your right nostril with your thumb, and leave the fingers together and pointing straight up.
- Breath long and deep through your left nostril.
- Have your eyes closed and focused at Ajna Chakra
- Start with 3 minutes, and over time slowly work your way up to 31 minutes.
"People who cannot control their eating have no control over their metabolism. It is a problem in the Eastern Hemisphere of the brain, which results in lack of endurance, effectiveness, and self-respect.
To correct the problem, breathe long and deep through the left nostril for 31 minutes a day for 90 days." ~Yogi Bhajan

Your sexuality is controlled by the pituitary, your sixth sense, not the sex organs. During intercourse, the outer edges of your auras blend and become one. In this interlocked state of higher consciousness, your body is regenerated and your psyche is rejuvenated. Powerful intuitive energy is created by the sixth sense, which gives you the creativity to fulfill your life. Your pituitary is also responsible for how you act and react according to the pheromones you and your partner produce.
"A woman's fragrance arises form her Crown Chakra, and can penetrate a man's aura with incredible speed and potency. When her arc line beams, it also penetrates his aura and stimulates his pituitary gland. The trigger for their sexual desire is this interplay between her arc line and his aura....A man cannot become aroused without a woman putting out the call through her fragrance. It triggers his scent to secrete, which in turn arouses a woman sensually. A man's primal need is to be emptied and refilled by the essence of the female spirit. Yogi Bhajan suggests preparing for sex three days in advance. All of a woman's Ten Light Bodies of Consciousness must be in the mood to make love.
Physiologically it is important for the man to arouse his partner long enough to activate her pheromones, so his pituitary is optimally stimulated in at the act of love.
A woman is most receptive in lovemaking if she is aroused to the point of tiding - wave after wave of orgasm. Take the time to involve all the senses. A man who wants to satisfy the woman will bring her to orgasm before he climaxes. Generally, it is not healthy for a man to refrain from ejaculation, as this can cause severe prostate problems, unless he is engaging in advanced practices (with safe and competent guidance) to retain his semen.

Falling asleep immediately after sex weakens the nervous system. The left nostril and parasympathetic nervous system must become dominant first (the right nostril becomes dominant at the point of climax). Dietary Recommendations

- After age 28, an ounce of cold-pressed almond oil a day is recommended. It helps lower cholesterol, reduce fat, and cleanse toxins from the body. It is a good source of protein, keeps your skin supple, and alleviates hunger.
- Eggplant and sesame oil are very energizing.
- Eliminate or sparingly use salt, sugar, alcohol, coffee, soda, and meat to maintain your Beauty & Radiance.
- Lemons are an excellent substitute for salt.
- "Beets are a must for men." Beets purify the bloodstream, and beet greens heal the digestive system. One of the best tonics for the liver is beet soup - borscht.
- Sweet potatoes and water chestnuts rebuild potency.
- Two cloves of garlic a day maintains sexual energy and increases semen production.
- Onions and ghee (clarified butter) are also good for semen production, and ghee prevents sexual problems and keeps your weight balanced.
- Unsalted raw pistachios are excellent for men.

This meditation regulates the rhythm of the breath to stimulate and alternate the pituitary energy, and the pineal radiation which controls the pituitary. The four-part breath stimulates the pituitary and pineal glands, bringing them into rhythm. The aura is also strengthened to give a clear and radiant projection.

- Exhale in one smooth long stroke through the nose with the fingers still and the mind silent.
- Begin with 3 minutes and work your way up to 31 minutes.

I am continuing to share insights from the book Divine Relationships by a couple Kundalini Yogis who also spent some time with Yogi Bhajan.

Commitment and Trust
"Without commitment there is no trust, and without trust you can not experience deep intimacy...The basics of a good relationship are openness, honesty, and the desire to give up your individuality to merge and become something new, something unique, something that has never been before. Commitment and Trust are two crucial keys to a healthy, growing, and perhaps life-long relationship. This can be similar to when we find a spiritual teacher or path, in that we have to commit to and trust in a discipline in order to progress. In this, you are actually committing to yourself, to the truth of your soul. Of course there needs to be discernment that the spiritual path, or person, is a good fit...but....how many of us give up too soon because of lack of an ability to truly commit?

Power of the Word
Do not under-estimate the power of the Word, which goes deeply into the psyche. And according to Kundalini Yoga, the impact of a Woman's Word has 16X the strength. Even if the Thought is not released into Word-form, the effect is still profound. By changing your projection (thought) alone, you can change the nature of your relationships. Work with the energy (i.e. light or heavy, brittle or soft, strong or weak, harsh or gentle, kind or mean) of your thoughts and your words over the next week and see how this shifts your relationships.
Timing is Key
Yogi Bhajan gave guidelines for the best times to talk to a man based on their Astrological Sign.
If he is an Earth sign (Virgo, Taurus, or Capricorn) it's best to talk to him when is on the move - walking of hiking - rather than face-to-face.
If he is a Fire sign (Leo, Sagittarius, or Aries) it's best to talk to him when he's eating.
If he is an Air sign (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) it's best to talk to him when he first wakes up - at first breath.
If he's a Water sign (Pisces, Cancer, or Scorpio) it's best to talk to him when he says he's happy.
As far as the best time to talk to Women, well, I guess Yogi Bhajan couldn't answer that one - smile.

Greetings and Welcome to Spring! We have just passed the April long week-end, full-moon, and another eclipse. My wish is that we all had some time for reflection and relaxation - and moments of stillness where what wanted to move through was granted some space to do Thy will of the Great Goddess, Adi Shakti. May we not forget the power of "Let go and let God" in those moments when we feel, seemingly, at a breaking point.

In what area of your life are you procrastinating? What is keeping you from starting? Look within and discern what is the essential block that is holding you back. You may have various answers that pop up, so make sure you are in your Neutral Mind (Meditative Mind) so you can hear the wisdom of your own soul telling you what the block is, and how to move forward. The following Mantra will help.
The Guru Gaitri Mantra
The Guru Gaitri Mantra is recommended for working with the 3rd Sutra. It stabilizes the hemispheres of the brain and balances the Heart Chakra, invoking the qualities of compassion and patience. This mantra helps you break through deep-seated blocks. It balances Ether (Akasha) and Earth, Space and Form. Chant this Mantra for 11 - 31 minutes to align yourself with Eight Facets of Consciousness (see mantra below), strengthen your relationship with your Soul, and to live beyond the constraints of Time and Space:

I have just returned home from a wonderful 5-week visit to Rishikesh India. "Rishi" means sage or saint, and Rishikesh is known as the land of the sages, the birth place of yoga, and where the Ganga river first emerges from the foothills of the Himalayas to weave its way through India.
I have just returned home from a wonderful 5-week visit to Rishikesh India. "Rishi" means sage or saint, and Rishikesh is known as the land of the sages, the birth place of yoga, and where the Ganga river first emerges from the foothills of the Himalayas to weave its way through India.
I stayed in Paramarth Niketan Ashram on the banks of the Holy River Ma Ganga, where I immersed in Kundalini Yoga teacher-training. We were up at 3:30am for the daily early morning Sadhana (4:30 - 7:00am), and usually in bed by 9:00pm, thoroughly exhausted. One morning, on the full moon, I woke up a little earlier to go dunk my whole body, three times, into the Ganga. Yes, it was freezing!!
Staying in the Ashram was beautiful. Every evening there was a Yagna and Aarti Ceremony. Yagna is a fire ritual done for purification, followed by Aarti, a celebration of Light. The chanting of mantras and singing of bhajans was exquisitely intoxicating. All were welcome and every night the area would be filled with dozens of Sadhus, locals, and foreigners from all over the world.
Shivrati, a festival celebrating Shiva and his consort Parvati, also took place while I was there. Shivrati is celebrated on the 14th night of the new moon in February. The sacred Shiva Linga (pictured below) is bathed with honey, milk, and water. The celebration lasts the full day and night - all night long I would drift in and out of sleep to the constant chanting. Amidst the horns, shouting, fire-crackers, and conglomeration of chaotic noises, this chanting was so beautifully mesmerizing.
Monkeys (and cows) were all over the place. This monkey was the larger, and generally more peaceful, variety. The smaller 'pink-butt' monkeys would get quite mischievous, stealing clothes that were laid out to dry, and snatching your food when you weren't looking.
There was a small Ghat (where the deceased bodies would be burned along the river) right near this picture below. This is the path we took when we went to Krishna Das's Kirtan concert, right near Swami Dayananda's Ashram, and also where Mooji was giving open Satsangs.
Rishikesh is such a peaceful, safe, and beautiful city. It is truly a mecca for Yoga and Spiritual exploration and deepening. There are dozens of ashrams, meditation and yoga classes, satsangs, and gurus to discover and experience.
One (of many) memorable experiences was sitting with Prem Baba at the Sachcha Dham Ashram. The energy was phenomenally uplifting - I literally felt my spine lengthen and lighten. There was Satsang and Kirtan and the Light energy transmission was like none other I had felt before.

The Subtle Body - The 9th Body of Light Consciousness
The Subtle Body is very light, transparent, and etheric. It permeates all the ten Light Bodies of Consciousness, and is concentrated around the soles of the feet. The Subtle Body contains wisdom and the knowledge of Infinity. Yogi Bhajan says, "Whatever you say, you must be in a position to hear. If you cannot hear what you speak, you will never hear the subtle voice of your own consciousness speaking to you."
The Subtle Body is very close to the Soul Body, and at death, the Subtle Body carries the Soul Body. Strengthening our Subtle Body brings us to be more intimate with our Soul, and gives us Self Awareness. The Subtle Body helps us see beyond the immediate reality to the sublime Universal play. Through the Subtle Body we can Know the Unknown, Hear the Unheard, and See the Unseen. We touch into other dimensions of Knowing.
Several ways to strengthen our Soul Body are:
1) Choose a Pranayama, Mantra, or Kriya to practice daily for 1000 days - this gives us the opportunity to tune into the subtleties of the gifts of that Pranayama/Mantra/Kriya that can not be attained otherwise.
2) Refine your speech, actions, diet, home space, and dress. Develop refinement through the arts, dance, and music.
3) Learn to penetrate deeply - read between the lines.

When we have a strong Subtle Body, we are sensitive, intuitive, subtle, and refined. We have great finesse, and a powerful calmness. We can penetrate deeply and see beyond superficiality. We learn quickly, can read between the lines, have the ability to see the big-picture, and are long-term in thinking and acting. We can access the information we need at will.
If we are weak in the Subtle Body, we may be gullible, naive, and easily fooled or mis-led. We may be unintentionally rough in speech and awkward in behaviour. We may be over-focused on details, and have a limited perspective.

The Subtle Body is very close to the Soul Body, and at death, the Subtle Body carries the Soul Body. Strengthening our Subtle Body brings us to be more intimate with our Soul, and gives us Self Awareness. The Subtle Body helps us see beyond the immediate reality to the sublime Universal play. Through the Subtle Body we can Know the Unknown, Hear the Unheard, and See the Unseen. We touch into other dimensions of Knowing.
Several ways to strengthen our Soul Body are:
1) Choose a Pranayama, Mantra, or Kriya to practice daily for 1000 days - this gives us the opportunity to tune into the subtleties of the gifts of that Pranayama/Mantra/Kriya that can not be attained otherwise.
2) Refine your speech, actions, diet, home space, and dress. Develop refinement through the arts, dance, and music.
3) Learn to penetrate deeply - read between the lines.

Practices for the Subtle Body: Antar Naad Mudra (Kabadshe Meditation) and Kriya
1) The Antaar Naad Mudra is a beautiful mantra meditation which refines communication and strengthens the Subtle Body.
Sit comfortably with the spine straight, a light Jalandhara Bandh (chin lock), and the hands in Buddhi Mudra (thumb tips touching the pinky finger tips). Chant for 11-31 minutes.

"Saa" represents the totality of Infinity. It connects us to the Etheric realm and our Subtle Body. "Har" is the energy of Creation manifested, and it roots us to the Earth. Buddhi Mudra is the Mudra of communication (the pinky being related to the planet Mercury, and the element Water).
Nirinjan Kaur has a lovely version of this mantra on her "Prem" album.

1) Can you put your Golden Milk recipe in your Blog? (yoga student)
Yes! Golden Milk is an ancient Ayurvedic Recipe that is wonderful for boosting the immune system, and has great anti-inflammatory properties.
There are varying recipes and proportions, but generally, this is what I do:
Very slowly warm over the stove-top:
1C Organic Milk (Now I use Organic Almond Milk as a milk substitute)
1tsp Organic Ghee (clarified butter - I found the only organic kind in a glass container at Health Essentials) (I use Organic Coconut Oil instead)
1/4tsp (about) Organic Tumeric Powder
Several to many shakes of Organic Ground Black Pepper (this is essential as it amplifies 1000-fold the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric)
Organic Honey to taste
And, I add the following Organic ground spices for extra flavour - Cardamon, Cinnamon, and Ginger.
Poor in a cup and drink!
